Hi and welcome to HDF!
If the speaker is not magnetically shielded, it can cause the screen of CRTs to discolor, as you mentioned. There really is no easy fix unless you can get the speaker up a bit higher.
Although not ideal, you can set the center channel speaker on top of TV and aim it slightly downward (pointing to the listening position).
