Make sure that the TV is turned on first and set to the HDMI input the player is connected to BEFORE turning on the player. It sounds like a HDCP handshake issue.

I would probably just send out 480p on SD DVDs since your display will do a very good job upscaling it to the native resolution (1920x1080p) of the display.
