Hey, 'Vine!

You finally got your Barack O Spocka avatar back...nice!

Thanks so much for reading and commenting; yes, ID4 was one of the titles I definitely got burned on in terms of double dipping. It just plain didn't look that good. Do you OWN ID4 on Blu, or have you just seen it/rented it?

I also agree that the studios need to do a better job with these titles -- I mean, back catalog titles like ID4, Out for Justice, etc. all look like they've merely been rushed to Blu-ray by means of re-mastering an HD DVD source or SD DVD just so the titles could get on the shelves. It doesn't seem like a great deal of care has been taken in many of these; a new format for a studio? Another way of raking in the cash by whipping old titles out fast -- they KNOW people will buy them. Unfortunately, I fell into that camp with ID4. The studios WON'T be getting my money again on a catalog title blind/rebuy.

That said, you also have to take into consideration the fact that films such as ID4 are really considered "old" now, and sometimes the studios can only do so much to restore or clean up a film that was based on old technology of sorts (not really "old" but you know what I mean) -- I heard rumors from Fox that titles from ID4's era had some issues for them in terms of compression techniques and transfering them to the optical disc formats, and so many titles from that time are appearing not too good to look at. As I said, much of ID4 on Blu looked fantastic -- the scene where Goldblum is playing chess with Hirsch in a New York City park looked ridiculously clear and sharp...but the problem is, so did the DVD version in these same scenes, which makes the Blu-ray merely make good scenes look BETTER. For the money they charge for these things, I agree with what you said -- the visuals should be leaping off the screen into our laps, practically. But, again, it's the limits of the source...

Well, at any rate, I hope they do reissue ID4 with a better compression/encoding scheme, making the film appear truly high definition in nature with flawless depth and dimensionality; would I rebuy it yet a third time on optical disc? I just don't know...

Let me know what you think of my reply here when you get a chance, and again, thanks for reading!

And I love Barack O Spocka, so don't get rid of him!
