If the Sony is a little much, look into a Toshiba. Similar performance, less money. And yes, the Sony V series will be better than the Sharp. Sharp used to be great, however, they have slipped a lot in the LCD world.

How about a plasma? You may find that you can get a 50-54" plasma for less than the LCDs.
