Ok, so if i have a 720p/1080i tv, i can only display 720p/1080i, and 1080p can input but cannot output, it wil scale it to either 720p or 1080i (correct?). If thats the case, why does 1080p looks so much better than either resolution.
(Im sorry, im a new HDTV owner. We have a HDTV downstairs but its a tube tv and can only display 480i, 480p, and 1080i)

We were all new to this at one point or another so no need to apologize for being new to this.
If you have a flat panel display it is ONLY ONE resolution that can be outputted. It cannot be 720p/1080i output. CRTs can display multiple resolutions, but LCD & plasma only display ONE resolution called the "Native Resolution". That is why they are called "Fixed Pixel Displays".
