It's fear mongering. The whole anti-virus biz. I guess it could be useful for people who do open emails in Outlook/Thunderbird from unknown spam bots, and then click the downloads images/content prompt. But if you're not that guy, you're not going to get viruses.

There is some luck to your not getting infected yet, but most of it is common sense in surfing and clicking on links..etc If you don't know who its from..etc, then you probably shouldn't click.

What you may not be protected against though, is if someone connected a computer to your network and was infected. In fact, it is possible that you could be infected with a trojan or other malware and just aren't aware of it.

Either way, AV can be had for free for home users. In business its pretty critical to have it since there's always someone who will click on something they shouldn't.
