What sony did seems pretty basic actually as the wand is really the key to the whole system.

You need some form of tactile feedback. They'll need to add a controller of some sort for natal to make it truly useful on a gaming front.
I don't think the wand is due to any shortcomings, I think it's purely down to a necessity to make the motion application as trans-genre as possible. It'll correct the wrongs of the Wii remote, and also provide other perks from being a camera as Natal offers. I don't want a completely controller free experience, you don't hold air when you use a sword, u don't hold air when driving etc.
