I really don't think he knew what he was talking about. After all he is a Pilot driver (that's where his expertise is) not a TV repairman, calibrator or reviewer. Either he was pulling your leg or just wanted to make himself look big in your eyes. At least that's my take.
And he may be used to seeing TV's in torch mode which is not the correct setting for a home environment.
