A very interesting read, thanks for posting it Cygnus. It is definitely true that we are now in a software age rather than a hardware one as is evident by how rapidly PCs (and PC style architechture) are spreading to every area of entertainment.
You just need to look at how much difference driver updates can make to how well a graphics card can run a game to see just how much is now reliant in the software as much as the hardware.
I remember the early "modern" Walkman's from Sony and the software locked up all the time and was practically unusable. It crippled many of their Mini Disc players.
