It sounds like a HDMI HDCP handshake issue with your cable box. Somewhat a comon issue with older cable boxes. What is your cable box model? Also, are you going strait to the TV or is your Sony receiver HDMI and are going through that?. Since you noted 2 optical cables, I would assume strait to the TV with the HDMI.
I would turn off and unplug both devices (TV and cable). Then reseat the HDMI cable, plug in the cable box then TV. Turn on cable box and then TV and see what happens. If you still get the error I would call the cable company and get a new/updated box. Some just require a firmware update.
1 other way around it would be to use component video (red, green and blue).. Same PQ as HDMI for the most part..
And just curious. How much did you pay for those Monster HDMI cables? If more than $30 I would take them back for a refund. You can get great high quality HDMI cables for around $7 a pop at places like monoprice.com. Or a $29 HDMI at Wally World..
