Can I copy a HDTV signal from my TV to a regular DVD disk? If so, I do have 3 questions.

1. What would be a good recorder to do this at a reasonable price?

Check out the Philips DVDR3575H/37 it is my principal recording unit. I also record via a capture card and PC and muxing etc. with Video-Redo TV Suite. This also makes for a high bitrate DVD but takes considerbly longer time wise.

These Philips units can be had for about $300. I've had my unit for over a year and have no problems. It works alot like an old VCR, one can set the time and quality of record and it will record the program to the unit's internal 160 Gig HD. One can then edit out the commercials and burn to SD DVD. Also one can record straight to a SD DVD disc if one doesn't mind commercials etc.

2. Would I at least get a fairly good DVD quality pic out of it?

Quality is based by the record setting, a one hour TV program can easily be recorded and burned to a SD DVD disc at a high bitrate...on the order of 8-9 mbs which is on the order of a SuperBit DVD. I also have a OPPO and these look quite good on a 56 inch screen. Depending upon length longer programs can be recorded to the unit's internal hardrive but to burn them to a SD DVD one will have to select a lower bitrate. This can be automatically determined by the unit or manually set. Note that they can be recorded to the HD at a high bitrate making for a better playback of the recorded program via the HD and also that high bitrate recorded programs that are too long for a single layer SD DVD can be split and burned on two discs.

3. Would the recorder fit a 2 hour HDTV movie on a regular DVD disc?

Longer programs can be recorded to the unit's internal harddrive but to burn them to a SD DVD one will have to select a lower bitrate. This can be automatically determined by the unit or manually set.

The reason I am thinking of this is that my oppo upconverting DVD player does such a great job of making regular DVD's look good on my plasma TV that I don't mind trying this all out.

Hope this helps,
