No regular DVD player can play back HiDef because they weren't designed to do so, and no one said they could.

You can store HD files on a regular DVD as an HD data file and play back in HD on a PS3 and some other Blu-Ray players.

But complaining that you need appropriate equipment is like complaining that you bought a movie on DVD and can't play it in your VHS machine. The point of HD video is to shoot in HD and play back on HD compatible equipment, including HDTVs and some form of HD player, including BD players or directly from the cam to an HDTV.
