Have you tried anything else, such as a DVD or Blu ray disc? When something doesn't look like you think it should, the first thing to consider is the input source. If the input source is putting out a sub-par signal, that is what you are going to see. So, it is possible that the Direct TV signal looks grainy, not your tv. If you are not putting in a hi-def signal, you are not going to get the best picture from your television.
