I'd not be suprised to learn it does play DVD-A. Perhaps they did not want to support DVD-A and just said it does not play them . . . There are a lot of 720P/1080I compatable (1366X768) TVs that DO accept a 1080P signal-- and several 1080P TVs that will not accept the 1080P signal. Who knows-- perhaps the OP will verify and confirm for us.
I have a lot of DVD-A discs because my car's sound system supports that format (old car)-- but they play fine on my HD-DVD player and for sure, the Oppo.

For the BD55 and your HD DVD players I am almost positive what you are hearing is the CD soundtrack not the DVD Audio as it requires a special audio decoding chip that wouldn't randomly be put in those devices.
