Thank you! There are lights bulbs turning on in my head (I'm new at this). Do I have this straight? If my Blu-ray discs have TrueHD, DTS-ES HD or DTS-Master Audio tracks, the PS3 MUST decode them and send LPCM to my receiver via HDMI. My Yamaha 663 features these decoders, but in order for them to decode, they must receive a bitstream, which the PS3 will NOT send by HDMI nor optical cable. That is why the PS3 menu lists its audio ouput as DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 (both not HD audio), and a host of LPCM's at various frequencies (to output the decoded HD audio).

I cannot find documentation that the PS3 has all these HD decoders, I assume that is a given. Well, actually I just found in my Yamaha manual that DTS-HD is a "mandatory audio standard" for Blu-ray and TrueHD is an "optional audio standard" for Blu-ray, so I guess that refers to players as well as media.

I wonder if there really is a difference in HD audio? For example, with DTS 96/24, (96000 Hz X 24 bit word length X 8 channels (theoretically) = 18 Mbps, the same as that boasted by HD audio (although Blu-ray may reach 24.5 Mbps). I assume that there are other variables that come into play.

Thanks again. This is starting to make sense. I'll disconnect my optical cable from my PS3.
