Anyone have an explanation?

Yes I can explain it.
Your PS3 cannot bitstream (send the undecoded) HD audio and can only send standard DD/DTS as undecoded bitstreams. If you want the HD audio soundtracks to play you MUST set the PS3 to do the decoding and send LPCM of that track to the receiver. You could change the HDMI output to only bitstream, but then you would just get standard DD/DTS instead of HD audio.
Your cable box CANNOT send HD audio period, so that is WHY it is reported as they are by your receiver. So in summary, if you want to hear HD audio with the PS3, you should leave it as it is. You are fine this way.
