Quite frankly this whole assumption that Blu-Ray is a format driven by PS3 owners (ie gamers) who like comic book movies is really getting old. Blu-Ray sales in 2006-2008 have been driven by early adopters that fall into the younger male demographic and many of which do own a PS3. Some of these PS3 owners like myself bought the PS3 almost exclusively to watch BD movies on because it is the best player at the best price. The fact that Joe Kane and Criterion use the PS3 as their BD player of choice tells you something. The fact that the PS3 constantly gets tops marks as a BD player from respective review sites and hardcore hardware enthusiasts at places like AVS tells you something.
As far as movies go, the fact of the matter is that the Top 25 selling movies in 2007 and in 2008 on DVD are driven by action adventure and animated movies. Same with the box office. So are gamers and children driving DVD sales too? Give me a break. It is what the mainstream public wants. They want comic book style movies and animated movies. This is what sells. Blu-Ray sales (and DVD for that matter) are driven by blockbuster day and date releases. That is why you see so many action movies on Blu-Ray because the studios are going after the target demographic of an early adopter. This is what sells right now. As Blu-Ray hardware becomes more mainstream and other demographics start to buy in, you will see other movies sell well on Blu-Ray. I think BoBY, or anyone else, would be hard pressed to show that studios targeted a different demographic when DVD was released. The fact that movies like "The Matrix" and "Air Force One" dominated sales early on tells you something. The studios are following the same game plan and they are simply giving the public what they want. The public wants action movies. The public loves comic book movies. Over time the Blu-Ray catalog will become more diversified as smaller studios come on board and studios open up their vaults. Over time the PS3 will have much less impact on Blu-Ray.
