Many TVs that have a digital output will not direct the SD analog audio inputs to the digital audio outputs only the ATSC tuner audio. There may be a feed through from the HDMI, but some sets there is not even for that. The TV manufacturers have not really caught up on the issues of digital audio yet.
We hooked up a plasma that had a ATSC tuner and QAM. We also had a SA DVR on the cable. There was also a DVD player and a VCR. I thought we could use the TV to select both the video and the audio by using the digital audio output to the surround receiver, but no. The audio was enabled for the ATSC and QAM tuners, but no go from the DVR, DVD or VCR.
It is best to hook up surround processors direct from the sources.
