Despite the market being crowed enough as is, a new competitor is set to release their own set top box, Blockbuster! Speaking at a Q3 conference call, the box will stream videos straight from Blockbuster’s online video service, Movielink. No pricing or firm release date has been announced other then the holiday season.
Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes also touched on the topic of Digital Downloads, a service which has caused many to plan ahead. Keyes claims the industry is dominated by VOD cable services at a estimated $1.4 billion. Keyes also claims by 2011 the Digital Downloads industry will grow to $2.5 billion.
I personally think this is a mistake, the market is already congested as is. They instead they should follow the Netflix route and integrate their service with an existing platform like the PS3 or Blu-ray players.
