I know I am not that technically literate, but I feel even I could get this right. Simple plug and play right?? or do I have to do something else besides just plugging in the cables??

My TV is set 1080i, and the HD is great, but I hear it is so much better with the HDMI cable.

Is this BS?? or am I the worst hooker upper on the planet??
While I'm not gonna say deadhead is wrong, I wouldn't say it is as simple as that. Some people might very well see a difference between component and HDMI, others (like deadhead) might not. Their could be a bunch of reasons why the picture does or does not look better over either cable. But if you are not seeing a difference, than you probably didn't do anything wrong, it's just that you don't see a difference.

The only other thing I can think of (not that this should matter) but who is your cable provider and what set top box do you have? Reason I ask is because I know with Cablevision, you can have the set top box pass the native signal (i.e., what ever the station is broadcasting (Fox mostly 720p it seems, NBC mostly 1080i same with CBS). This could give you a better picture if your TV supports 720p also. If your TV only does 1080i, ignore this paragraph.
