I would suggest you get yourself a calibration DVD like Avia II or DVE. Using that you will be able to adjust your TV to it's best picture settings (brightness, contrast, color, tine, sharpness) which will adjust those dark whites you are writing about as well as the other mentioned things.
Once you do that, your TV will look much, much better, believe it or not.
