Two things come to mind:
First; yes, it is certainly possible that there is a noticable difference in the upscalers.
The best way to evaluate for this would be to connect the two players to the same TV input port with an appropriate switch and the same content playing on each player and then A/B the two players.
Second; it could be the calibration of the input ports to the TV. Your reference to a "sharpness" difference and a "red tinge" sure sounds more like a calibration issue than an upscaling issue. Have the input ports on the TV been properly calibrated?
