Default High Def on DVD?

Hello, I was wondering if it's possible to burn high definition video to a DVD disc (4.7GB) to watch on a PS3? I know it would have to be a shorter video because of the size limitation, but will it even be possible to watch from a DVD? Is the bit rate too high for DVD to handle or anything? Or is the only difference the size? I know I tried to burn some high def Planet Earth to DVDs before, but the audio ended up not matching the video. Of course, I tried it on a regular DVD player. Would it work better on a High Def player, or did I just mess something up while burning, or does it just not work like that? Thanks.
