Hi, Richard,
I see it's been a really long time since you posted this, but, I just found it.
At work, I shoot with the JVC GY-HD100U (basically the same camera as yours -- just the "first out the door" version). I found that some tweaking was required to get the best out of it, but that once tweaked, I can get excellent results out of all but the worst lighting conditions (I shoot TV news). For decks, I use Sony DSR-1500As and DSR-25s.
I have recently purchased a used XL2 for my personal and freelance projects. I've found, when compared to the JVC standard def. modes, the XL2 basically blows the JVC out of the water -- especially after a little tweaking!
On to. Any good quality MiniDV tape will work in the XL2. I use a mixture of Sony Digital Master series (also used in the JVC), Sony ME-DVM-series and Panasonic "Linear Plus" MiniDV cassettes, and all seem to work just fine.
Your existing JVC deck should play back tapes recorded in the XL2 just fine, just like it does tapes from the JVC in standard def. modes.

If you shoot standard def with this camera, it's fine. If you shoot High Def with this camera you need to basically leave the camera rolling as Final Cut Pro is not really compatible with it and you will lose most of your clips if they are short.
The JVC HD101E also has no image stabilization, no auto focus and isn't amazing under low-light conditions. You also have to white balance like mad all the time. It's perfect for filmmaking, but not weddings and events. I'm thinking of getting the Canon XL2 to shoot events like weddings.
It is great under low-light, there is auto focus, image stabilisation, it's a reasonable price, you can change to 24p shooting if you like and you can shoot 16:9 too. I could then use the JVC HD101E as a back-up at events and use it to only shoot High Definition when the need arises.
Question arise, however:
Canon don't have a deck and I have the JVC BR-HD50 deck. I'm also using JVC tapes with the JVC camera. Canon don't have their own tapes (as far as I know), so would ordinary Panasonic or other type of tape stock work with the Canon XL2 and would it be okay to use them with the JVC deck.
At the moment it's a JVC camera, deck and tapestock.
If using the Canon XL2, it'll be a Canon (camera) mixed with Panasonic (or other make of tape) mixed with JVC (deck).
Anybody else here mix their makes?
Does anybody here have any experience with the XL2, maybe they could share it?
