I think the difference is that in the US people are more likely to try something else. While in Japan, they tend to stick to their local brands and products they know.
Clearly if the Xbox had been crap, the 360 wouldn't have done as well as its done. But the Xbox was good and the 360 (hardware issues aside) is even better.
I think MS has already won as they've increased their market which is really the first step - you can't always come in and dominate right from the start.
