The thing with Bose is that they are very overpriced with very little performance. It's like buying a Ferrari with a 4-cylinder engine, thinking it had an 8-cylinder, but you never noticed because of the car's light weight or you drive gingerly.
The cubes are meant to mesh with the Acoustimass module, which is essentially 1 or 2 mid range woofers masquerading as a subwoofer. When you swap the Acoustimass module for a true subwoofer that goes lower in frequency, you are losing a lot of midrange, but gaining much more low. Either way, it's a bad scenario, since you are missing crucial frequencies.
I'd opt to sell the Bose system (very high resale value, surprisingly) and get at least a pair of floor or bookshelf speakers and a matching center channel to build around if funds are tight.
