Washington, D.C. (March 19, 2008) -- Best Buy today will announce that it will offer a $50 gift card to customers who purchased an HD DVD player from any Best Buy store.

That's according to an article by The New York Times.

The gift card, which can be spent on any item in the store, is part of a growing industry effort to appease HD DVD owners who chose the wrong format in the high-def disc war between Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Toshiba announced last month that it's pulling the plug on HD DVD at the end of March, meaning that the studios will stop releasing HD DVD titles in the coming weeks.

“We don’t want to leave customers hanging," said Brian Dunn, Best Buy's president, according to The Times.

Circuit City has also pitched in by offering a complete credit for the return of an HD DVD purchased at a Circuit City store. However, the player must be returned within 90 days of purchase.

The New York Times reports that the Best Buy gift cards will be mailed automatically to customers who purchased HD DVD players by February 23 through rewards programs, the company's web site or those who purchased extended warranties. All others must show proof of purchase to get the card.

The card will not include an expiration date, The Times writes.
