deadhead68 is exactly right. The firewire port OUTPUTS whatever is being played on the DVR. You can MOVE HD content from your DVR to another device (like D-VHS)-- but it will not be a COPY; you just moved it to another medium. To MOVE HD content from one medium to another is permitted and does not violate any copy protection regulations-- to make a COPY is an entirely different matter, and should not be discussed here.
Perhaps as nonlinear implied, you may, with 3rd party software, be able capture (I assume, COPY) HD content to another hard drive and actually DO something with it.
