Heck, even if you are using the VCR to record, you should get it out of your primary signal path. Run the cable box directly to your receiver and/or TV. Run the output of your VCR to your receiver and/or TV as well. If you want to record on the VCR, then run a second set of audio/video cables from the cable box to the VCR.
You don't mention what kind of equipment you have, making it hard to give anything more than pretty generic advice.
