You are ABSOLUTELY right about a "variable" video processing delay! The problem I found when I tried the Samsung HLP4663W, was that the delay DID VARY on different movies. Neither the 6 LG DLPs I tried, or the RCA DLP I have now and LOVE have had ANY problem with video delay.
Who wants to fiddle with the sound delay feature in some receivers just to not have some movies look like dubbed movies? Most receivers do not have this feature anyway so for those people it is a moot point. For the people who do have this feature built into their receiver, do you really want to have to play with it on each movie you watch? It not only requires a different delay for each movie, but can change WITHIN any movie too. Not to mention the WAF of spending $2,000.00-$5,000.00 on a set just to have to deal with this too. Is Samsung kidding?
It is a problem almost exclusively to Samsung DLPs. I believe it is due the extensive "processing" they do to the video. They either need to reduce the amount of video processing their sets do, OR they have to use much faster chips to do the processing.
I personally do not like the look of that extra processing the Samsungs do myself. Just compare the facial lines when viewing an older persons face on a Samsung compared to any competitors DLP and you will find that the Samsung removes a lot of those wrinkles. I would rather see it as it IS, not how Samsung wants me to see it. Add to the fact that Samsungs video electronics are not fast enough to handle that extra processing and you have video delayed lip-sync issues.
It is too bad Samsung didn't chose to use faster chips or cut back on the video processing (I would have preferred this), to eliminate their lip-sync problems, because they do seem to have a pretty good customer service department. When will they "get it" about the video delays?
