Default No 5.1?

Wow, you mean the sets audio output is only stereo? That's ridiculous! The role of an audio out is to just take the signal being fed to it and transfer it to another source. That other source should process the signal into 5.1. That is providing it gets the whole signal and not just part of it. I have an old Phillips "ID TV" from years ago and it has it's own Surround processor in it in case your stereo of the time didn't have Surround Sound. Have we gone backwards?

Now I know why my friend who owns a high-end audio store has recommended a Denon receiver to me, replacing my Adcom separates. He says to put EVERYTHING into the receiver and it will upconvert and output all of it with ONE CABLE that goes to the set. Your cable box, DVD, VCR, all of it. Then, use the Denon remote to choose your source. Sounds like the ultimate in easy and he swears the sound quality is good enough that I won't miss my separate amp and pre-amp combo. Supposedly this won't degrade the video either.

I think it should eliminate the lip-snyc issue also although I'm not certain if it does it automatically or has a variable delay built in so you can tinker with it.

This store is very high-end , carrying Krell, Wilson Audio, B&W, etc. and has been around for years. he knows his stuff. The receiver he recommended runs about $895, Denon has other more expensive models but he said not to bother.
