Yes, in fact the Durabis coating was developed by TDK first for recordable media, not BD-ROM.
30GB HD DVD writables are $19.99, but if you're looking for recordable mass storage for your computer, then BD is the choice between the two at this point.
On the other hand, if you're looking for mass storage for your computer (and not for making Hi-Def discs), there are quite a few alternatives to either Blu-Ray or HD DVD--you can get an external 500GB HDD for less than a quarter the price of a BD burner and ten 50GB BD discs.
For that matter, you can get a 500GB drive for less than half the price of just the ten 50GB BD discs alone.
