Washington, D.C. (February 10, 2011) -- Sony, Discovery and IMAX will launch their jointly-owned 3D HD channel this Sunday on DIRECTV.
USA Today reports that the channel, called 3Net, will air 11 original programs this month, largely nature movies and documentaries. However, one show will be a 3D version of Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl, the network's counter programming answer to the Super Bowl.
In later months, 3Net is expected to add concerts and movies from Sony's 3D film library, including Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
The new 3D channel will join ESPN 3D, which launched last June, and DIRECTV's n3D.
Sales of 3D HDTVs have been disappointing thus far with consumers complaining about everything from the required 3D goggles to a lack of content to the premium prices for the sets.
But 3Net CEO Tom Cosgrove tells USA Today that his channel will help persuade consumers to embrace the new technology.
"There hasn't been enough (programming) to get people compelled to watch," he said.
Maybe you should post this up in the DirecTV thread too since it is only launching on DTV.
Damn Time Warner always behind on the times. They released a half assed 3D channel in which half or most of the content can already be viewed through another device such as your TV, PS3, and Blurayblayer apps.... Give me Discovery, ESPN you thieves!! Premium price for what?
Always wanted to try DirectTV, not fond of the dish on the house though.
