~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note for people who casually clicked on this thread thinking that I am reviewing last year's release of this film:
I am reviewing the stereoscopic 3D version of the film (for a 3DTV). This review has absolutely nothing to do with the terribly unwatchable anaglyphic 3D (red & green glasses) version that came with last year's release of this film....
Now for the review:
I have always loved Coraline after I snagged the 2D version when it was released on Blu-ray last year. The phrase "From the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas" was enough to warrant a blind-buy for me.
I have seen this one two times before today...but never in 3D. I'm pretty sure that it was 3D in theaters, but I never saw it in theaters. Last year's BD edition had anaglyphic 3D, but that was atrocious and I only watched like 5 or 10 minutes of that before giving up on it. Seeing it in stereoscopic HD 3D this afternoon was a real treat...by far the best 3D at-home movie experience available at the time of me writing this review.
While nowhere near as spectacular a film as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline is still a great movie. After writing my other 3D movie review today (Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs), I was anxious to watch this disc, and already wondering what score I would give it. Afterall, I had already seen it twice.
A 9/10 seemed to under-rate this film, while a 9.5/10 seemed a bit much. Before I put this disc in, I was considering the idea of actually breaking protocol and giving it a 9.25/10 (). However, seeing it in 3D is enough to push it up to 9.5/10. This movie truly does benefit from 3D...not just visually...the movie itself is better when watched in 3D. Part of the charm of this film are the "magical moments" and the imaginative imagery, and the 3D really sweetens this aspect of the movie.
Like with last year's 2D release, both the PQ and AQ are fantastic. It looks great and has wonderful sound to match it's appearance. If you've seen and heard last year's release, then you know what I mean.
Coraline was the first stop-motion animated movie originally filmed in 3D, and the 3DQ here really shines. For now, this is the 3D reference BD as far as 3D goes.
The sense of depth is amazing, and the few "stuff popping out of the screen" moments do not come across as gimmicky at all...in fact they are rather cool. "Immersive" is the working word that I've been using in my 3D film reviews, and none of the ones I've seen do it as well as this one does it. It's a really great experience.
Like Panasonic's other promo 3D film, Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs, there are no special features. Another thing that I might note about this one is that, unlike the other 3D BDs that I own, there is no 2D option. Not that I'd want to watch it in 2D again after seeing it in 3D, but it does strike me as being a bit odd.
The lack of any special features, the missing 2D option, and the fact that the only way you could currently own this is via a Panasonic promotion makes me think that a "deluxe edition" is probably planned for the future...
I currently own three 3D BDs (remember folks, we are in serious early adopter territory at the moment), and I will confidently say that Coraline is easily the best of the lot.
Movie: 9.5/10
VQ: 10/10
AQ: 10/10
3DQ: 3/3
Supplements: 0/10. There aren't any.
Final word: Please please please remake The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D!
Thanks for the review. I am not a big fan of Tim Burton, but did like the 1st 2 Batman movies with Michael Keaton he directed.
Have you tried using the PS3 for a 3D movie yet, or are we still waiting for the update to play 3D movies on the PS3?
I don't know. I bought a dedicated 3D BD player.
It has twin HDMI so that I can hold off for at least for a while before upgrading the receiver in the gameroom. The gameroom is coming along btw...looking much better than the initial pics I posted - I cleaned up the mess of wires! I even stacked my consoles on a proper mount instead of on TV trays!
At this point, the investment of time and money into that gameroom means that it's gonna be the HT room. So much for it being MY room, lmao.
Yeah, exactly.
Except we're not married and we don't have any kids.
Which one you gonna watch first when they come?
You gonna go ahead and fire up Coraline first, or start with Ice Age and save the best for last?
