My new standard for rating 3DQ:

When I reviewed Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, I gave the 3DQ a 10/10. Now that I've watched a second 3D BD, I can see that this 10 point scale doesn't make sense for 3DQ. 3D basically is either done right or done wrong. I am now and from here on out gonna use a 3 point system for 3DQ. Here's how it breaks down:
  • 0/3 - The 3D is terrible. Watch the 2D version.
  • 1/3 - The 3D is below par.
  • 2/3 - The 3D is done quite well, but there are some minor issues.
  • 3/3 - The 3D is done totally correctly; it makes the movie more immersive and enjoyable.

Now, with that out of the way, here goes my review:

IMO, it's hard for an adult to rate kid's movies. You can have a good time watching them, but as an adult (and not really the intended audience), your view of them can vary a great deal depending on how the film struck you and how much you were able to enjoy it. Quite frankly, I really dug Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. I gave that film an 8.5/10 because it was entertaining and I did enjoy it a lot. I did not enjoy Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs nearly as much.

It's telling that I've seen Meatballs twice now, and both times I watched it constantly from start to finish, whereas with Dawn of the Dinosaurs I actually paused the movie twice during my first viewing to browse the web. It just didn't do it for me. Meatballs was more interesting, and had better humor...at least to me. This one just seemed too "kiddie" with not much to offer given my tastes. Maybe I missed out on some inside stuff since I didn't watch the first two films, but this one was kinda a drag, whereas I like Meatballs quite a bit. Not a bad film though, and I'm sure that kids will love it.

This is high-quality CGI, and it looks picture-perfect. Very, very nice looking. Of course we have come to expect this from CGI, but still it's very pleasing to the eye.

I have to say that the audio really let me down. It's not really flawed in any technical sense. It is very clear and crisp. It just lacks "oomph," as in it needs to pack some more punch. It could have been exciting audio, but it's not.

Like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, the 3DQ here is top-notch. It is done very well; it creates a genuine sense of depth without getting too "in your face" or resorting to being gimmicky. Is this a sign that all 3D BDs will be this good with 3DQ? Maybe. I hope so. Though there is the possibility that the reason that we are seeing such great 3DQ in the early content is that the industry is making sure that we 3DTV EAs are telling all our friends how well done these movies are in hopes that our friends will buy 3DTVs.

There is the possibilty that when/if 3DTV becomes more mainstream, filmmakers may start cutting corners or resorting to gimmicks in 3D flicks. Let's pray that won't happen, because both Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Ice Age Dawn of The Dinosaurs are excellent examples of how 3D should be done. They make the movie better and more immersive, rather than relying on the 3D itself to try and carry the entire film.

EDIT - I just noticed that neither of the 3D movies from the Panasonic promotion have any special features.

(Btw, the only "special features" in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs are 2 previews...)

Movie: 6/10
VQ: 10/10
AQ: 7/10
3DQ: 3/3
Supplements: 0/10. There aren't any.
Final word: If you own this, then Panasonic gave it to you for free. What's to complain about?

0-3 wouldn't that make it a 4 point system? LOL

Don't ever ask a math professor how to count...we forgot that basic skill a long time ago.

I found Ice Age III to have some good humour while Cloudy had pretty much none. I've seen and laughed at Ice Age III a couple of times, but have no desire to see Cloudy again. Different strokes for different folks.

We might possibly have Resident Evil Afterlife by the end of this year.

Thanks. I'll try to keep up the 3D BD reviews as more are released.

I bought the VT25 primarily because it was the best thing that I could put in my gameroom at time of purchase, and now I'm really digging the 3D actually.

Had DirecTV install an HD DVR in the gameroom today and I just got the 3D channels working (was having problems with it for a few hours...such is the price you pay for being an early adopter). Been watching 3D televsion broadcasting for a bit. It's actually cooler and "less gimmicky" than I imagined it would be...

My kids liked this 3rd installment the best of the 3 Ice Age movies they said. We only watched the 2D version of it though.

Well I didn't see either of the first two but wasn't too impressed by this one...
