Are you sure you are watching it on HBO HD and not on regular HBO? It will only be true HD and 16:9 on HBO HD, otherwise you will get a 4:3 picture with black bars.

Also, with the Sony (I have the 55" LCD), you have to have your screen mode set to Full instead of Normal.
