My thanks to all of you. Just thought I'd let you know of the outcome.
After struggling with this for two days, this morning I swapped out from Time Warner the cable box -- same model, etc. Brought it home, hooked it up, used the box's resolution to set the appropriate resolutions for the TV, set the picture format, etc., hooked up the HDMI at both ends, and SUCCESS.
Wasn't a TV issue -- it was a bad cable box issue. Finally.
