I haven't tried another device yet (such as my dvd player hooked up to a different TV) that has an HDMI connection -- will try that tomorrow.

I had not heard of the "handshake" issue before the response above. After doing a little research over the Internet the past hour or so, it sounds as though that may be the real problem. A couple of times over the past two days, when I have had the component video cables hooked up (component video Source on the TV) between the cable box and TV (which does offer me HD on the HD channels) and have then plugged in the HDMI both to the cable box and TV, the TV has given me a copy protection message when I switch the TV to the HDMI Source.

Is there any way around this? Would Samsung be of any help to deal with this issue?

Should I just live with the component video/audio cables which gives me an HD picture and forget about it?

Who would have ever thought just a few years ago that a TV and cable box interface could be so damn complex?!?
