Actually, the trend is toward
not producing more DVHS decks. JVC and Mitsubishi have put out several consumer decks each and other manufacturers have licensed these decks for their own branding -- but I don't think any but JVC and Mitsubishi remain on the market.
Because of the impending HD-DVD and Blu-ray recorders, the support for DVHS (which was never really all that strong to begin with) has dropped off very fast. D-Theater, the prerecorded high definition tapes topped out at about 100 releases, but the last release was several months ago and no more new tapes have been announced.
Also, firewire support is very spotty. Because of an FCC mandate, a consumer can request a firewire-enabled cable box, but there is no satellite support for firewire (aside from a very expensive hack), and OTA receivers with firewire are few and far in between.
The recent trend isn't simply against DVHS but against any method of archiving.
And Maicaw, the major difference between firewire and DVI is that DVI is an uncompressed signal that cannot be recorded on consumer equipment. Firewire is a compressed signal that can.
