This is truly an unfortunate situation. A crying shame if you ask me.

We have maxed out HDTV the day the first HD DVD/BD hit the street over a year ago.

Yet they show us all these large improvements - and we can never have them with the HD chain that we are using today.

Problems with NTSC versus HDTV

1. Resolution - Solved by HDTV - up to 6X better

2. Interlace - introduced almost 60 years ago. Still in use today and will continue for YEARS to come.

HD Disc (HDTV) solves the problem - 1080x24P output (just need the proper display)

3. 3:2 Pulldown - introduced again over 50 years ago

HD Disc (HDTV) again solves the problem - 1080x24P output (need the proper display)

4. 8 bit Color Signal - Color Banding - introduced over 50 years ago.

No improvement here

Deep Color is the improvement for #4. But we will not be able to take advantage of it. Even the crummy little step xvYCC would offer - NG. Only to be used for HD Camcorders that do not use a BD as the recording medium.

That means you can shoot your own home made HD "movies" with a $2,000 HD Camcorder and produce a better looking image than a professional HD Camera can at a cost of $100,000! (as long as you have a display that accepts xvYCC)
