I don't think that Sony can purposefully manipulate numbers to showcase that their format sold more, however it IS possible that USA Today has its' own bias for or against one of the formats.
In any case it doesn't matter. 300 has shown what an economic asset HD DVD still is. With only 300,000 or so players (standalone and AO) they managed to sell an amazing amount, especially when you compare that to the 3 million+ BD players (standalone and PS3).
300 has only solidified HD DVDs hold on an emerging HD market, no matter if that market ends up becoming a dual format one.
