A D-VHS records to a tape cartridge similar to VHS, but digitally in HDTV.

The LG DVR is well liked, but does have the disadvantage it is only capable of tuning digital cable channels that are not encrypted. No CableCard.

Sony has similar products that DO have CableCard & are full digital cable compatible coming out next month.
