If you have an A/V receiver, you should use it. In all likelihood, it'll produce far better sound (especially with Infinity speakers, good brand) than your TV and you can do more with it.
You should run the best audio connection from your satellite receiver to your A/V receiver. Look for an optical connection, and if not that use the digital coax connection. Try to maximize your connection for both your satellite receiver and DVD player.
I wouldn't try mixing external speakers with your TV speakers. I just don't think it'd work. You'd be getting the same sound from two sets of speakers.
I wouldn't disconnect your sound from your satellite receiver to your TV if at all possible. You can use that connection as a backup, just in case you or your housemates don't want to worry about powering up another device just to watch/listen to basic TV.
If you have the money, get another two speakers so that you can utilize Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound from your DVD's. Almost all DVD's have 5.1 sound . Its worth it. Besides, you'll want the surround sound once you get an HD receiver. A growing number of HD broadcasts utilize 5.1 surround sound.
