Default Really?

First thoughts: at 3 1/2 years you are probably reaching the end of the expected life of the bulb and that is why your picture appears dim. Typically the intensity diminishes near the end of the life of the bulb. No problem, as leaving the set on 24/7 will soon result in a burnt out bulb.

The grinding noise too will probably resolve itself as it is probably the color wheel having trouble spinning in the dust bunny that has accumulated during the past 3 1/2 years, of course the grinding noise could be caused by the cooling fan, and that dust bunny is what is restricting the airflow which has in turn caused the "temp" (as in temperature) light to come on.

So in conclusion: soon the bulb will be one with history and when you replace it you will, of necessity, clean out the dust bunny and so free up the color wheel and or the fan or clean the vent screen which may or may not stop the grinding noise. Now it is posible the grinding will subside all of itself when the fan stops spinning or the color wheel stops spinning. But you will know that as the picture will not be at all acceptable. And the cost, well, have you looked at any new sets lately? Because it will most likely be cheaper to replace than repair. But what the hey, you got the four year warranty right? So let her rip, just stand back in case of flying pieces.
Bests,
