I don't know if anyone has looked at this in the last year or so but I figured I would post this just in case anyone else gets curious. I have this TV and was also curious about the ability for it to produce 720p. I read several other articles and posts that state that it downgrades the 720p signal to 480p. If you put the tv into service mode by turning the tv off and pressing "display, 5, volume up and then power it will show you exactly what resolution it is producing. When you do this and give it a 720p signal. You should see that it does indeed downgrade it to 480p, very dissapointing. You will also see that, if you feed it a 1080i format it will say that it is in 1080i mode. I confirmed this tonight with a Sony rep who stated that it is designed to do that. It also says on page 39 of the owners manual that; "When a 720p format signal is received, it is converted into a 480p format signal." I guess my question is why. Isn't 720p lower resolution that 1080i? Is it a software limitation or some kind of hardware limitation?
