It goes away if I watch only widescreen, so I'm pretty sure it's not permanent. I refuse to watch 4:3 programming squished or stretched, as it looks awful and unnatural, but I HATE HATE HATE having that stripe on the side when I watch HD programming or play HD video games.

Is there ANYTHING I can do to get this to stop happening or to get it to go away quicker? Will fans help?
It sounds like your Vizio is remembering what was on it from before. You are saying that the black stripe goes away.

I would call Vizio and ask them.
