I am not an expert on this, but as I understand it (and it is entirely dependent on the equipment you buy) that 480p is generally output via component. The upscaling to 720 and 1080 is via the DVI and/or HDMI output.
Then there is a dependancy on the TV. One must also understand what the TV will do to the signal from "which" input.
Best bet would get some choices and then go to the manufacturers website and view/download the manual.
Don't rely on any salesman ....they just don't know for sure !!!
