Default I had the same problem

I had the same problem when I bought my Toshiba - the DVD picture quality was not what I expected, especially with the dark scenes (black on black). Ended up upgrading my DVD player to a Denon 2800MK and now everything looks awesome. Not all progressive scan DVD players are created equal.

If I could live that scenario over again, I might do it differently. For one thing, my tv set still had the "factory" settings. There are DVD's out there that will walk you through a video and audio "tuneup" of your tv and receiver. That doesn't sound like the problem you are having, but it is worth a try.

Let me echo what Micmax said - if your tv has a good line doubler, you may be able to use the existing DVD player with an interlaced picture and let tv do the work. My understanding is that when the DVD player is set on progressive scan, it over-rides the line doubling option on the tv.

But your best option is probably to upgrade the DVD player.
