A lot of films *are* 2.35:1 and will display with banding on the top and bottom, even on a widescreen display, but they shouldn't look stretched, and they should look squeezed when set for 4:3.
Does your TV have different stretch modes for filling the screen?

It just occured to me that he just got his first widescreen TV but did not change the display mode in his DVD PLAYER setup. I am not talking about the DVD movie setup, but the player itself. THAT would make movies look stretched on a widescreen too!
