Colour/Noise bar problem
I am reposting this this cry for help from the cable forum.
Four months ago we purchased an Hitachi 42HDF52 plasma and a Toshiba SD-4980SC upconverting DVD and leased a Motorola DCT6412 HD-DVR box from Cogeco in Ontario, Canada.
Life was so simple with the old crt set and analog cable!!
The TV has DVI and component cables for HD; we use a HDMI to DVI cable for the DVD player and it works fine; and component cables between the DCT6412 and the TV.
The problem showed up watching HD in 1080i, the picture has great detail, but bands of pink and green slowly move up the screen, playing havoc with skin tones and light backgrounds. (They can be clearly seen on the blank screen if the cable box is turned off). When changing back to a non HD channel the TV asks if you want the best picture for 480i, accepting means using the tv remote, the set then switches inputs to Y, Cb, Cr, the picture quality improves and the colour bands seem to go away.
The cable company claimed the problem was with the tv, Hitachi sent a service tech around and he found that the problem was linked to the "blue" cable from the box, as the "noise bars" went when it was disconnected from the box, and the dvd player was fine with the cables. He suggested using the DVI output from the box.
I ordered a DVI/DVI cable, but may have got the wrong one, as it did not work. Also purchased new component cables, but no improvement.
The PVR was giving problems in playback & fast forward, so Cogeco replaced it. The new one, DCT6412 111, has a HDMI output, not DVI, so I tried the cable from the dvd player that I know works, no good, a red screen that comes on and off about every 2 secs.
Cogeco claim that some customers do use the HDMI port, but that they do "not support" it!!
I have found a setting on the DCT6412 for regular channels called "stretch", that gives a good clear picture using the 1080i Y,Pb,Pr input setting, and avoids changing the tv input, which confuses the wife, but we still have the moving colour problem, even with the different box.
My apologies for this long, first, post, but I wanted to try and explain the problem well, in hope of finding some good advice.
Many thanks in advance, Trevor.
